45 degrees

45 degrees is the second work in a series of studies looking at bodies and the built environment. Performed by dancer Phoebe Robinson with video documentation by Cobie Orger.

Deeply mesmerising and meditative, 45 degrees is cast and choreographed from the minimal architecture of a stairwell and the void it produces. The video loop reveals two perspectives of the work, back and front, screened side-by-side – one moulded by the architectural form, the other referenced by a string line drawing the angle of 45 degrees in space.

Phoebe dances the wedge-void phrases with a string line in the gallery that draws the line of the stairwell in space so the weight of the form is removed and replaced with air. The line is a reference we are not trying to fit the movement into it but rather remember the kinesthetics of the moving.
